I went to WebMd for this information because I want to give you the most accurate advice available on the net. I want BabyDigitalThermometer.org to be a helpful, useful resource for you but there may be times you may want to get a second opinion on things and WebMd is an excellent place to go for more research. So if you have any questions or need other advice you can go there and do more research just like I do.
How Do I Take My Baby’s Temperature?
You can take a child’s temperature a few different ways using a baby digital thermometer: via the rectum (rectally), mouth (orally), ear, or under the arm (axillary).
Baby digital thermometers rectally provide the most accurate temperature readings, and can be easiest to take in an infant. Typically, babies can’t hold an oral thermometer in place, and the reading of an ear or underarm thermometer won’t be as accurate.
To take a rectal temperature, first make sure the baby digital thermometer is clean. Wash it with soap and water or wipe it off with rubbing alcohol. Lay your baby on the belly or on the back with legs bent into the chest. Apply a little bit of petroleum jelly around the thermometer bulb and gently insert it about 1 inch into the rectum opening. Hold the digital baby thermometer in place for about two minutes until you hear the “beep.”
At What Temperature Does My Baby Have a Fever?
A baby’s normal temperature can range from about 97 degrees Fahrenheit up to 100.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Most doctors say a rectal temperature over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit is considered a fever.

Ok this isn’t about baby digital thermometers but it was so cute I had to share it.
A boy had reached four without giving up the habit of sucking his thumb, though his mother had tried everything from bribery to reasoning to painting it with lemon juice to discourage the habit.
Finally she tried threats, warning her son that …
“If you don’t stop sucking your thumb, your stomach is going to blow up like a balloon.”
Later that day, walking in the park, mother and son saw a pregnant woman sitting on a bench.
The four-year-old considered her gravely for a minute, then spoke to her saying …
“Uh-oh .. I know what you’ve been doing.”
Like me many of you have more then one child, I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old I have used several different baby digital thermometers but my favorite right now is the: Summer Infant Three-In-One Family Thermometer I orginally bought this item for my sister’s baby shower. I liked it so much I bought one for myself to try as well. I’ve used this baby digital thermometer 1.5 yrs, and I am very happy with the results. I have a 3 year old and an 4 month old and I needed something that actually worked for the different age groups (not like some of the other baby digital thermometers I have tried!).
This 3-in-1 baby digital thermometer in my opinion is very fast and accurate. I like the fact that it’s the closest to what they use at the doctor’s office (I immediately liked that). It has a special attachment for under the arm for those of you that have a toddler, it gives you more surface area to get a better reading (I use the rectal attachment for my infant). I also like that this baby digital thermometer lights up red or green to indicate a fever or not. This is a nice feature to have if you need to take your child’s temperature during
the night and don’t want to wake him/her by turning on a light to read the thermometer. Another great feature of this item is that the three attachment store nicely inside the thermometer so you always know where they are when you need them. I use this a lot, have had it a year and a half and have never had to replace the batteries. This is what I give to my friends who are expecting babies. I love this baby digital thermometer. Now as much as I love this baby digital thermometer, I’m going to be fair and test, research and review other ones as well so you will have several options to choose from. Just because I like this one it may not be what you need at this time so stay tuned! More to come…
I talk a lot about baby digital thermometers here at BabyDigitalThermometer.org. There are however some important things to take note of while shopping for a baby digital thermometer for your own use or as a gift to an expecting mother, there is a distinct difference between infants, babies, and toddlers. In fact a difference between all baby digital thermometers, oral, rectal, under arm, and ear thermometers that are recommend for babies infants, and toddlers.
Our recommended thermometers for babies is still the Infra-Red Baby Ear Thermometer, however when it comes to infants, there is an even better option in what is know as the Temporal Scanner. A Temporal Scanner is also a baby digital thermometer, but it takes a reading by swiping it gently across the infants forehead. As an infants ear is so tiny, sometimes trying to take their temperature with an infra-red thermometer can not only be a little tricky, but may not be 100% accurate. Digital baby thermometers rectally provide the most accurate temperature readings, and can be easiest to take in an infant.
WebMD reccommends the following for accurate readings for infants “To take a rectal temperature, first make sure the digital baby thermometer is clean. Wash it with soap and water or wipe it off with rubbing alcohol. Lay your baby on the belly or on the back with legs bent into the chest. Apply a little bit of petroleum jelly around the thermometer bulb and gently insert it about 1 inch into the rectum opening. Hold the digital baby thermometer in place for about two minutes until you hear the ‘beep.’”
Any parent who knows about the importance of accurately measuring their child temperature when a fever sets in, will understand why having a baby digital thermometer in their home is an absolute must have. Baby digital thermometers rectally provide the most accurate temperature readings, and can be easiest to take in an infant. According to WebMd “Typically, babies can’t hold an oral thermometer in place, and the reading of an underarm baby digital thermometer won’t be as accurate.”
There are many options available when deciding which baby digital thermometer to purchase…The purpose of this site is to help you find the most suitable option with the most accurate readings for your baby.
